So here at HeadFirst Productions we are a multi-tasking bunch! Sophie, our Artistic Director, is currently directing a production of Gounod's Romeo & Juliet for Riverside Opera. Rehearsals are in full swing already, with the show opening at the Rose Theatre Kingston in May.
Riverside Opera is a fantastic company with a strong focus on collaboration between a community chorus and a professional cast and production team. The chorus consists of forty singers ranging in age and experience; some have been performing with RO since its inception nearly twenty years ago, and some have never set foot on a stage before. Under the nurturing guidance of Music Director Sam Evans - a professional baritone-turned-Conductor - the chorus grow in confidence and ability every week.
Having performed in the past at venues such as Epsom Playhouse and Richmond Theatre, this year Kingston-based Riverside Opera has returned home to take Romeo & Juliet to the Rose Theatre. This will be the first ever run of an opera at The Rose, there is a commissioned English translation of the French libretto, and an orchestra of thirty.
Just like us, Riverside Opera is committed to providing educational opportunities for young people in the local area. Alongside last year's production of Carmen RO reached over 200 pupils at local schools, and about 20 children from Epsom Primary School performed in the production at Epsom Playhouse. This year a range of project are taking place for local school children including composition workshops at Tolworth Girls' School, art & design classes based on Romeo & Juliet at Burlington Junior School, and a family-focused afternoon of opera and theatre presented by Laura Bacon, star of CBeebies' Melody.
We love to support all the other projects our team and collaborators are involved with so watch this space for news on what Hannah has been up to.
